PMC, the world’s premier manufacturer of studio reference monitors, has announced the launch of the DB1S-A II and TB2S-A II compact monitors. These upgraded and improved versions of the highly successful DB1S-A and TB2S-A activated models once again raise the bar in the realm of nearfield monitoring. Designed for small to medium sized control rooms they are ideal for, project studios, music recording, film, video postproduction and broadcast applications in either stereo or surround configurations.
Both hand- built precision models retain their driver compliment of a large soft dome tweeter, with the smaller DB1S-AII featuring a 5 ½” bass unit and the TB2S-A II with a similar 6 ½” unit. Fine tuning and component upgrades to the 12dB per octave high order crossover network of the TB2S-A II have been made to further enhance the transparency of the mid/vocal region.
The major area of upgrade to both models is inclusion of PMC’s all new DS-001, a cutting edge Class D power module. This unit ups the power from the previous module’s output of 100W to 200W into 8 ohms and radically reduces distortion producing a significantly cleaner, faster more neutral presentation across the full bandwidth. This innovative ultra low noise design is not load dependant and along with the highly accurate ATL™ (Advanced Transmission Line) bass loading system, produces a supremely flat frequency response. A single feedback loop circuit senses the loudspeaker load and adjusts the response accordingly, making output impedance of this amplifier design extremely low and bettering many larger, audiophile ‘Class A’ analogue designs. Both power supply and amplifier are highly efficient with the amplifier delivering 92% efficiency. It also benefits from with extremely low radiated and conducted EMI, which is perfect for low noise environments. The slim line unit takes the identical form to the previous power module allowing for factory upgrades to existing TB2S-A & DB1S-A models.
Both models have increase their overall transparency and retain the same sonic ‘imprint’ of the larger mid –field and full range PMC systems, all of which exhibit high signal definition, consistent on/off axis dispersion, extended frequency response and tonal consistency at all volume levels. As such, these compact monitors do not display the usual performance constraints characteristic of nearfield monitor designs, due to the combination of new DS-001 radical digital amplification and ATL™ (Advanced Transmission Line) bass loading that allows for signal reproduction on a scale comparable with cabinets several times their size.
The DS-001 power amplifier will be available as a standalone unit or in a rack mounted multichannel format from October, 2009.

LITTLE BROTHER TO THE STUNNING FAT BUSTARD BREAKS COVER
Thermionic Culture have released the Little Bustard, their second valve summing mixer which has been designed to complement the Fat Bustard valve summing mixer by increasing the number of inputs channels. Or the new 19” 2u Little Bustard can be used independently by itself as a stand alone mixer. Features include 16 input channels arranged as 6x stereo pairs with fixed gain at unity level with on/off switches, 4x mono inputs with mute switches and pan pots which can be defeated by another switch adding an extra 6dB of gain. The master output section has independent left & right 31 position output indented pots with a gain range from –17db to +2db. The valve stages use a pair of ECC83/12AX7 on the gain stage, and a pair of PC86’s for the output stage. The master section will also have a simple output level indicator. To create a monster-summing mixer, The Little Bustard’s outputs can be plugged into the Fat Bustard’s AUX inputs increasing the number of channels to 28.

The new compact Fireface UC has been uncompromisingly optimized for highest performance under both Windows and Mac OS. Based on a newly developed RME Hammerfall core the Fireface UC provides revolutionary ultra-low latencies even with multiple channels. It uses two different firmware versions with different transfer methods to remove current restrictions of typical USB audio interfaces. The unit’s operating mode Win or Mac can be changed directly at the unit at any time. Under Mac OS the Fireface’s MIDI ports are class compliant, the operating system therefore automatically uses the included MIDI driver.
Under both Operating Systems the available latencies are simply sensational. The smallest buffer offered under Windows Vista has 48 samples, under Mac OS X 14 samples. With this RME provides a performance comparable to PCI Express interfaces – under USB 2.0.

To celebrate Thermionic Cultures 11th anniversary, Thermionic Culture have announced the Culture Vulture Anniversary Limited Edition. The Anniversay model will be based on the companies current standard Culture Vulture but it has far more radical possibilities, in particular for guitar and bass applications. The production will be strictly limited to 80 units and will have the front panel finished in Thermionic red instead of black.
MULLARD & PHILPS VALVES
The valves specially selected for the anniversary edition are Mullard and Philips NV, who owned 50% of Mullard. Mullard have a reputation for producing the best valves in the world and Thermionic have also specified the ‘M’ or military version, which was Mullard’s top grade model. The 2x input valves are Mullard M8100/CV4010, these are very high gain, low noise versions of the EF95, and provide better coupling for guitar and bass inputs with an even fatter warmer sound and were also used in the very first hand wired Vultures. The distortion valve is different too, another 2x Mullard’s, the M8196/CV4011 which is a low noise version of the 6AS6 distortion valve as used in the standard Culture Vulture. The last valve used is a single Philips ECG type 5963 double triode valve as the out put for both channel, this is a very high quality version of the American made ECC82.
10 POSITION DISTORTION TYPE SELECTOR INC FILTERS
The distortion type selector switch now has 10 positions instead of the standard 3, the first two are triode and pentode as on the standard Vulture, with the next 5 all being Pentode that have been specifically designed with guitars and basses in mind by having a tuned filter optimized to musical notes. The final 3 positions are variations on the original Pentode 2 settings, SC1, SC2, SC3, ( squash! ) offers radical distortion effects like frequency doubling and over compression effects. As the overdrive section has an additional 4dB gain, an extra overdrive position has been added which halves the available overdrive gain. Thermionic Cultures product developer and beta tester Nick Terry, who came up with the idea for the original Culture Vulture and has recently engineered ‘The Klaxons’, ‘Franz Ferdinand’ and ‘Simian Mobile Disco’ said; “The new Squash setting are nothing like a traditional EQ, it’s extremely effective and brings guitars and basses to life in mixes like nothing else, I recently used it on an album project and it’s just become indispensable for me.”
